La Palma Island Marine Reserve
Fishing interest marine reserves are declared as areas traditionally used as fishing grounds to get the sustained exploitation of its resources. This is achieved through specific measures so as to recover and maintain the traditional fisheries as well as to make the population become aware of such measures.
Since the year 2001, La Palma counts with a Marine Reserve embracing a coastal strip of 15 km. It is divided into two areas: Marine Reserve located between Caleta de los Pájaros and Punta Gruesa and deeply limited by the 1,000 m isobath; inside, there is an Integral Reserve, between Baja del Lance and Punta del Hombre and the 500 m deep isobath. Therefore, its restrictive measures are treated as a use limitation, and some fishing and recreational activities may be practiced, as scuba diving in the Marine Reserve, whilst in the Integral Area only scientific activities are allowed.
It counts with a small marine platform and sharp bottoms counting with cracks and tunnels of high landscape and biological value. It is an area comprising a high flora and fauna biodiversity, on account of fishing interest species in good conservation conditions (species difficult to observe in other islands of the archipelago) and their recovery possibilities through fishing control measures.
Within the great variety of species present in this marine reserve, the following stand out: brown algae, tropical anemones, invertebrates living in caves and cracks as the Mediterranean slipper lobster (Scyllarides latus) or mammals and turtles, among which the following should be remarked: the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). We may not forget those fishing interest species such as the Mediterranean parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense), salemas (Sarpa salpa), amberjacks (Seriola spp) and the Island grouper (Mycteroperca fusca).
